Daily prayer is steadier than that. It is a way of beginning the morning, starting study, or ending worship by remembering God on purpose. ## Notes ### What prayer is Prayer is speaking with Paramatma. It can be thanks, praise, a request for a clean mind, or a promise to do what is right. In Sanatan life, set prayers are learned by heart so that the mouth and the mind can rest on true words instead of rushing into the day. Daily prayer does not replace kindness. A learner who chants and then cheats has missed the point. Prayer is meant to make the rest of the day more honest, more attentive and less selfish. That is spiritual development: a slow growth in love of God and in good character. PAGE 4: Lesson 1: Why daily prayer matters — Three prayers, different moments ### Three prayers, different moments This sub-strand names three prayers, all from Sanatan or Hindu tradition: - **Gayatri Mantra** — a morning and worship prayer asking the divine light to guide the mind - **Twamev Mata cha Pita Twamey** — a prayer of trust, often near the close of worship, saying that God is mother, father, friend and everything - **Saraswati Vandana** — a salutation to Saraswati before study, asking for true learning Knowing which prayer fits which occasion is part of familiarisation. You would not treat a prayer before study as a joke at the back of the class, and you would not rush the Gayatri while pushing in a queue. ### Times of day Morning prayer sets the mind before work. A prayer before lessons asks for understanding rather than for an easy way to avoid work. An evening or closing prayer hands the day back to God, including the parts that went badly. Festivals have extra prayers, but these three are for ordinary days. Recite only the words you have been taught carefully. Do not invent extra lines. Listen to a correct recording if your teacher provides one, and match the sound with respect. PAGE 6: Lesson 2: The Gayatri Mantra — The meaning LESSON 2: THE GAYATRI MANTRA ============================ ## What you will learn • Recite the Gayatri Mantra correctly and calmly. • Explain its meaning in simple English. Curriculum outcomes: a) identify the three selected prayers performed for different occasions for familiarisation; b) recite the three selected prayers for understanding the meanings to deepen the faith ## Introduction The Gayatri Mantra is a very old Vedic prayer to the divine light that gives understanding. Many Sanatan families recite it in the morning. You will learn the words slowly, then the meaning, so that the mouth does not run ahead of the mind. ## Notes ### The words Learn this form, line by line: Om bhur bhuvah svah Tat savitur varenyam Bhargo devasya dhimahi Dhiyo yo nah prachodayat Say it softly at first. Keep the ends of the words clear. Do not turn it into a race. If a line is difficult, your teacher or a recording can give the sound. Intonation means the rise and fall of the voice. A respectful tone is steady, not shouted and not giggled. ### The meaning In simple English the prayer says: we meditate on the excellent glory of the Creator, the divine light. May that light inspire and guide our understanding. Bhur, bhuvah and svah name the earth, the middle space and the heaven, a way of saying the whole world. Savitur points to the divine source of light. The last line is the request: may our thoughts be led in the right direction. ### When it is used The Gayatri is recited in the morning, at sandhya time in homes that keep that custom, and during many acts of worship. At school it may be recited at assembly when the teacher has chosen it. It is a prayer for wisdom, so it also fits a quiet moment before study. It is not a spell for winning by cheating. ### How to practise Stand or sit straight. Hands may be joined. Breathe in, then recite without straining the throat. Learn one line a day if you need to. When you can say all four lines, add the meaning in your own words so that faith and understanding stay together. All learners in the class may learn this prayer as part of the lesson. Reciting it is a way of understanding Sanatan worship. Join with respect, even if your family also has other prayers at home. This prayer says that God is all of those, and more. It is a prayer of trust, often sung or spoken near the end of worship. PAGE 8: Lesson 3: Twamev Mata cha Pita Twamey — The meaning ## Notes ### The words The name on the design is Twamev Mata cha Pita Twamey. The prayer is learned in these four lines: Twameva mata cha pita twameva Twameva bandhush cha sakha twameva Twameva vidya dravinam twameva Twameva sarvam mama deva deva Twameva means 'you alone'. Speak the lines evenly. The sound 'cha' is 'and'. Do not skip the third line, which is easy to forget. ### The meaning - You alone are my mother, and you alone are my father. - You alone are my relative, and you alone are my friend. - You alone are my knowledge, and you alone are my wealth. - You alone are my everything, O God of gods. The prayer does not tell you to ignore your human parents. It says that behind every good gift, including parents, friends and learning, is Paramatma. When a parent is far away, or a friend disappoints you, the prayer is a place to rest trust. ### When it is used Many congregations recite it at the close of puja or aarti, when worshippers offer the whole day to God. It can also be a personal evening prayer. It is a prayer of belonging, not a prayer for showing off a loud voice. ### A meaning to keep If God is your mother and father, then you are not abandoned. If God is your wealth, then cheating to get money is a strange answer to the prayer. If God is your knowledge, then learning is received with thanks, not with pride that insults slower learners. LESSON 4: SARASWATI VANDANA =========================== ## What you will learn • Recite the Saraswati Vandana used in this lesson. • Explain who Saraswati is and why the prayer is said before study. Curriculum outcomes: a) identify the three selected prayers performed for different occasions for familiarisation; b) recite the three selected prayers for understanding the meanings to deepen the faith ## Introduction Before a music lesson or a page of reading, some learners simply start. A Sanatan prayer before study does something more. It greets Saraswati, the deity of knowledge, speech and the arts, and asks that learning be successful and clean. PAGE 10: Lesson 4: Saraswati Vandana — The words to learn ## Notes ### Who Saraswati is In Sanatan tradition Saraswati is the deity of learning, speech, music and wisdom. She is often shown in white, seated with a veena and a book, and with a swan nearby. White suggests a clear mind. The book suggests study. You do not need a picture in order to pray, but a picture can help you remember who is being greeted. A vandana is a salutation, a respectful greeting. ### The words to learn This is the short vandana used before study: Saraswati namastubhyam Varade kamarupini Vidyarambham karishyami Siddhir bhavatu me sada Namastubhyam means 'I bow to you'. Vidyarambham karishyami means 'I am about to begin my learning'. Siddhir bhavatu me sada means 'May success always be mine'. The whole prayer says: O Saraswati, I bow to you, giver of blessings, who grants what is rightly wished. I am beginning my study. May I always succeed. ### Success of the right kind Success here does not mean passing by copying. It means understanding, remembering and using knowledge well. A learner may recite this vandana at assembly, at the start of homework, or before a school performance of music or reading. Recite it, then do the work. ### Practice Join your hands, recite slowly, and then open your book. If you forget a line, begin again rather than mumbling. Twameva is especially a prayer of trust at the close of worship. 3. Saraswati Vandana directly says, 'I am beginning my learning.' Answer: Saraswati Vandana, because it is a salutation before study. ## Activity: Saraswati Vandana before a short reading You will need: The four lines on a chart, A paragraph of any school reading 1. Listen to the vandana and repeat each line. 2. Say the meaning together: I bow to Saraswati; I am beginning my learning; may I succeed. 3. Recite the prayer, then read one paragraph silently and tell a partner one fact you understood. 4. Prayer is similar. The words of the Gayatri, Twameva and the Saraswati Vandana are all valuable, and each one has a moment when its meaning is especially clear. PAGE 12: Lesson 5: Reciting at the right time — A simple guide ## Notes ### A simple guide - Recite the **Gayatri Mantra** when you are beginning the day or joining worship and you want your mind led by divine light. - Recite **Twamev Mata cha Pita Twamey** when worship is closing or when you need to remember that God holds you as parent and friend. - Recite **Saraswati Vandana** when you open a book, begin a lesson, or start music and art practice. Nothing stops a family from using a prayer at another sincere moment. This guide stops the three from being jumbled in your memory. ### Why timing matters Words sink in when they match the action. Saying 'I am beginning my learning' and then chatting for twenty minutes wastes the prayer. Saying 'you alone are my wealth' and then stealing a coin from a bag is a contradiction. The significance of time is that the body is about to do something, and the prayer points that action towards God. ### Manners while others recite Stand still in assembly. If you are not reciting, keep silent rather than mocking the sound. Humility means you do not shove a partner who is slower. Offer the first line quietly if they ask for help. Correct intonation comes from listening, not from shouting over the group. ### A week's plan Morning: Gayatri, even two careful repetitions. Before homework: Saraswati Vandana. After a family or class prayer: Twameva. At the end of the week, notice whether the prayers changed anything small: less panic, a kinder reply, or homework actually started. Spiritual development is that noticing. The prayers are short enough for a child. Their meanings are large enough for a lifetime. As a class, recite one prayer as you would at assembly. Stand straight and wait for the signal to start. 4. Afterwards, tell your partner one reason daily prayer helps spiritual growth. LESSON 6: MANDIRS IN YOUR COUNTY AND IN KENYA ============================================= ## What you will learn • Identify a Hindu mandir in their own locality or the nearest one they can find on a map. • Record its name and place without inventing details. Curriculum outcomes: d) identify the Hindu places of worship in their locality for familiarisation; e) map the Hindu Mandir (temples) in Kenya for exact location ## Introduction A mandir is a Sanatan or Hindu temple, a building set apart for darshan, prayer and community. Kenya has mandirs where Hindu families live. Your task is to find a real one, not to guess a name. PAGE 14: Lesson 6: Mandirs in your county and in Kenya — In your locality ## Notes ### What a mandir is for People go to a mandir to see the murti, to pray, to hear bhajan and aarti, to celebrate festivals and to meet as a community. A mandir is a place of worship, so behaviour there is quieter and more careful than in a market. Shoes come off. Voices drop. ### In your locality Start with what is near you. Ask a parent, a teacher or a family friend whether there is a Sanatan or Hindu mandir in your estate, town or county. Write the name they give you. If you have visited it, describe only what you really saw: a gate, a hall, a dome or tower, a courtyard. If you have not visited it, do not pretend you have. If there is no mandir in your county, say so honestly. Then look for the nearest one in a neighbouring county. 'Nearest' must come from an adult or from a map, not from imagination. ### Mapping Use a printed map of Kenya or a digital map with your teacher. Find your county. Mark the town where the mandir stands. Notice the direction from your home: towards the coast, towards the lake, or within your own town. Write the name of the mandir and the town. Do not invent a distance in kilometres. If the map shows a scale and your teacher helps you read it, you may record that distance. Otherwise write 'distance not measured'. One mandir that many Kenyan learners see in photographs is the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir. It is a real Hindu mandir. It may not be the one nearest your school. Always name the mandir your map or your family actually identifies. PAGE 15: Lesson 6: Mandirs in your county and in Kenya — Example 1 ### A collage without fake labels Pictures for a collage should be of real temples. Label a picture only when you know what it is. A photo of a building you cannot identify should be labelled 'mandir, name not yet known' until an adult helps you. ## Key words • mandir — a Sanatan or Hindu temple • locality — the area around your home or school • darshan — seeing the murti with reverence ## Worked examples ### Example 1 The class is asked for a mandir in their county. Nobody has visited one. What is an honest answer? Working: 1. Do not invent a name or a street. 2. Ask a teacher or parent, or search a map together. 3. If none is in the county, record the nearest real mandir and say it is outside the county. Answer: Find a real mandir with an adult or a map, or state clearly that the nearest one is outside the county. With your teacher, locate your county on a map of Kenya. 2. Identify a Sanatan or Hindu mandir in your locality, or the nearest one an adult can confirm. Write its name and town. 3. Make a collage of mandir pictures. Label only the pictures you can name truthfully. 4. Share one fact you are sure of, and one question you still need to ask. ## Practice 1. What is a mandir? 2. LESSON 7: RITES AND RITUALS IN A MANDIR ======================================= ## What you will learn • Describe the rites a visitor should observe in a Sanatan or Hindu mandir. • Explain why those rites are kept. Curriculum outcomes: f) observe rites and rituals while visiting Sanatan/Hindu Mandirs in Kenya (temple) ## Introduction Walking into a mandir as if it were a shop confuses everyone and can offend the worshippers. Rites and rituals are the agreed ways of showing respect. They also help the mind slow down. ## Notes ### Before you enter Go with a parent, a teacher or the school. Dress neatly and modestly. Leave shoes on the rack provided. Some mandirs ask you to wash your hands or feet. Switch a phone to silent. Do not chew gum or eat snacks as you walk in. PAGE 17: Lesson 7: Rites and rituals in a mandir — Inside ### Inside - Bow when you come before the murti. You may join your hands in namaskara. - Do not touch the murti unless a priest invites that action. In most visits, looking with respect is the right darshan. - If you are offered a plate to make an offering, follow the family's custom: a flower, a little water or incense may be used. Do not invent a rite. - Sit on the floor if that is the custom, without pointing your feet rudely at the shrine. - Join the aarti quietly if it is happening. Move your hands only as your host shows you. Receive prasad in your right hand, or as you are shown, and do not snatch. - Walk around the shrine only if that pradakshina is part of the visit and you are shown the direction. In many mandirs people keep the shrine on their right. - Speak softly. Children do not run between worshippers. ### Why these rites exist They show that the place and the murti are honoured. They protect holy objects from careless handling. They give every person, including a stranger, the same pattern so that nobody has to guess. Towers, carvings, lamps and a clear path to the shrine are there for a reason. Looking closely is part of appreciating the place of worship. As you look at a picture or a real building, watch for these parts: - **Garbhagriha** — the inner shrine where the main murti rests. It is the heart of the temple. - **Shikhara or dome** — a tower or rounded roof that makes the shrine visible from far away and lifts the eye upward. - **Mandapa** — a hall or porch where people sit, sing and listen. - **Gateway and courtyard** — the entrance that takes you from the busy street into a calmer space. Shoes are left near here. - **Carvings and colour** — figures from scripture, flowers and patterns cut in stone or wood, or painted on walls. They teach stories to people who may not be reading at that moment. - **Lamps and bells** — light and sound used in worship. You may not see every feature in every Kenyan mandir. Some communities worship in a simple hall. Simplicity can be beautiful too. Describe what is there. ### Why beauty belongs to worship Careful architecture says that Paramatma is worthy of our best skill. A clean floor, a straight row of lamps and a protected shrine help worshippers feel safe and attentive. A sense of aesthetics means you notice what is well made and you do not spoil it with litter, scribbles or rough play. Colour calmly. If you add a tower, you may label it shikhara. Do not copy a classmate's drawing and hand it in as yours. On a visit, notice one feature you find beautiful and one rule you kept.
